Movement before Seat work

  • Movement Before Seat Work

Since we are limited with what we can do for the next few weeks, I tried to come up with some activities to do with things accessible around the house. Kids need to move! And they need to move throughout the day. Providing sensory rich movement activities throughout the day helps facilitate attention and ability to sit and get our “home” work completed. Try some of these activities before sitting for a period of time or in between lessons or assignments. End each activity with a calming task if over stimulated.

1- Sergeant Salutation- a yoga movement sequence from Kidding Around Yoga; see link on my “Website Links Page-movement” or see here https://youtu.be/Ojm6U-NXmlc

2- Parachute play- use a large bed sheet to use as parachute; place folded socks, soft toys, balloon etc. on top and make the toys “jump”. Lift arms up and down multiple times, hold up in the air as long as possible or some people in group hold up while one person runs under the parachute.

3- Toilet paper bowling- since we all ran out to buy all of the TP off of the shelves… See my “Website links Page-movement” and look for Kinesiokids. This link also has other game ideas shown.

4-- Pillow activities - see my “website Links page-movement” or here at https:// www.andnextcomesl.com/2016/03/gross-motor-activities-for-kids.html

5- Freeze dance- play some music and be creative; kids like to imitate how silly you can be; play music and stop it at random times to “freeze”.

6- Household chores- Kids love to be helpers. Try cooking, cleaning, baking, yard work. I will also post a page of Heavy work Activities in the Sensory Processing Tab

7- Bat a balloon using a balloon for play is safer than a ball. Hit up in the air , to one another, over a “net” , at a target on the wall etc.

8- Wheelbarrow Walks or animal walks
