New Jersey Department of Education regulations require that the basic team includes a learning consultant (LDTC), school social worker, and a school psychologist. For a preschool student, the regulations require the basic team to also include a speech/language specialist.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LEARNING CONSULTANT?
The learning consultant is trained to determine the learning styles of the students and to recommend specific teaching methods/materials which will best accommodate a student's needs. The learning consultant also determines, through assessment, whether a student who has been referred to the Child Study Team has the academic knowledge and skills necessary for school success. In addition, the learning consultant provides consultative services to teachers and parents to identify and develop strategies to enhance the student's academic performance.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST?
The school psychologist has expertise in determining a student's level of intellectual development. The psychologist's focus includes the social and emotional status of students and how these factors may affect performance and behavior in the school setting.The school psychologist consults with classroom and special education teachers along with parents to maximize each child's potential and to create a supportive and enriching educational environment.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER?
The school social worker's focus lies in assessing the student in relation to family, school and community. The school social worker gathers information related to the student's developmental milestones and health status, along with family and school histories as they pertain to school performance and progress. The school social worker is the primary coordinator of community resources on behalf of students.
