Number Sense Activities
Using the number line:
Ask your child to hop up and down on the number line. Here are a few examples:
· Put your finger on 3. Hop up 5 spaces. Where do you land? (8)
· Put your finger on 7 hop back 3 spaces. Where do you land? (4)
Count up/back can be used interchangeably with “hop up/back.”
Use the number line to solve addition and subtraction problems.
Using the number grid:
Count by 1s on the number grid. Encourage your child to use a return sweep motion when they come to the end of a row.
Ask your child to locate a particular number on the grid. For example, say “Find the number 24 and point to it.”
After your child has located a number ask them to tell you the numbers that come before/after.
Skip count using the number grid-count by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
