When Should Your Child Stay Home?
Please keep in mind if your child cannot actively participate in the learning environment because they feel tired, lethargic and unable to pay attention in class, they might benefit from staying at home.
DIARRHEA/ VOMITING
- Keep a child home if vomiting and/or has diarrhea even if occurs one time only.
- Student may return to school if symptoms have resolved for at least 24 hours
FEVER
- Keep child home if temperature is 100.00 degress and up
- Student must stay home until temperature is less than 100.0 degrees for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications.
***please note, if your child was sent home with a fever, he/she must stay home the next day
COLD/COUGH
- Keep child home with temp of 100.0 and up
- If there is uncontrollable coughing or significant lack of energy, the child needs to remain at home even if your child has no fever
EARACHE
- Keep child home if temperature is 100.00 degrees and up or in pain.
- Consult your healthcare provider if ear pain is present.
HEADACHE
- Keep child home if headaches are severe and do not respond to acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
- Contact your medical provider if headaches persisits.
HEAD LICE
- Keep child home until Lice and nit free.
- The parent will be instructed to provide lice/nit treatment (per parent choice) for their child. The student must be cleared by the health office prior to going to the classroom.
- A parent should accompany the student to the health office during head check.
PINK EYE (CONJUNCTIVITIS)
- If one or both eyes appear red, irritated, presence of drainage of mucous, pus or clear liquid child must stay home until evaluated by a healthcare provider.
- Child may return to school 24 hours after treatment if required.
RASHES
A rash may be an indication of:
- a viral or bacterial infection
- allergic reaction to medication
- food
- environmental agent
If child has an unusual rash with additional symptoms such as itching, fever or appearing ill, child needs to remain at home until cleared by healthcare provider to return to school.
SORE THROAT
- Student must stay home if they are having sore throat, white spots in back of throat, headache, and upset stomach.
- Contact healthcare provider to determine if child has strep throat.
- If positive for strep throat, child may come to school 24 hours after antibiotic treatment has started.
STOMACH PAIN
- Student must stay home if stomachache is persistent or severe enough to limit activity and participation in class.
- Consult your health care provider.
