The HighScope Curriculum

The Little Dragons use the HighScope Curriculum. This is a research based curriculum that is approved by New Jersey and aligned with the 2014 New Jersey Preschool Teaching and Learning Standards. Children are an active participant in their learning and instruction is guided by children’s interests. The curriculum is designed so that instruction is differentiated for all students; therefore students will learn and develop at their own pace. Children learn by exploring their environment and are encouraged to make choices and solve problems on their own. The curriculum also focuses on having a consistent classroom routine, student-adult interactions, and a learning environment where materials are easily accessible to students. Children are assessed by the adults observing and recording the behaviors and actions of the children. The observation will help guide lesson plans and activities for the students. We also incorporate classroom positive behavioral supports (PBS) as well as individual supports if needed. We encourage and reward appropriate behavior. We use modeling, role play, clear expectations and other strategies to teach and encourage children to demonstrate appropriate behaviors. We try to be proactive and set the children up for success! When needed for individual students, we also incorporate the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).  Listed below is the High Scope typical day and an explanation of each activity.

  • The typical day- The following are activities we will do throughout the day:

    • Arrival- Children will arrive and will sign in and then have some time to play and greet each other.

    • Greeting time- During this time the children will come together on the carpet. We will have a greeting activity, music and talk about the day.

    • Plan-Do-Review- During this time children will plan what they want to do and where they want to play. The children will then carry out their plans during play time. We call this their “work” time. After cleaning up we will come together again to talk about what the children did during play time. We call this “recall.”

    •  Snack- Students will need to bring in their own snack.

    • Large group- During large group time the students will come to the carpet for a story, special activity, games or other whole class activities.

    • Small group- During small group time, the children are divided into two small groups. We will introduce many math, science and literacy activities in small groups.

    • Outside time- Weather permitting, we will have time for the children to play outside. If it is raining or too cold, we will have a gross motor activity in the classroom.
